4 Yoga Poses You Can Do From a Chair

Namaste!

Thank you for reading our Axis Health Blog today! Please be kind to your body and remember not to do anything that feels uncomfortable. These poses are just suggestions and you may modify them as needed. Participate at your own risk.

Begin sitting up-right at the edge of your chair.
Inhale deeply while raising your arms out to the side and then up to the sky.
Exhale your hands to prayer hands at heart center. Repeat with long slow, energizing breaths.
Again, inhale deeply while raising your arms out to the side and then up to the sky. Hold on to your right wrist with your left hand, thumb facing down. As you exhale, begin to lift the arm up and away from the rib cage to the left, while slightly bending to the left until you feel the stretch in your right side body and armpit area.

Repeating this on the opposite side, inhale deeply while raising your arms out to the side and then up to the sky. This time, hold on to your left wrist with your right hand, thumb facing down. As you exhale, begin to lift the arm up and away from the rib cage to the right, while slightly bending to the right until you feel the stretch in your left side body and armpit area.

Release both of your arms down by your side and take your right ear towards your right shoulder to stretch the left side of your neck. After a few deep breaths here, tuck your chin slightly  to move this stretch from the side of your neck into the back of the left side of the neck. Stay here until you are ready to move on.

Come back to straight up and center and repeat on the other side. With your arms by your sides or on your lap, take your left ear towards your left shoulder to stretch the right side of your neck. After a few deep breaths here, tuck your chin slightly to move this stretch from the side of your neck into the back of the right side of the neck. Stay here until you are ready to move. Come back to straight up and center and repeat on both sides as needed.

Make sure you have plenty of room in front of you now. Sitting on the end of your chair with your feet touching the ground make sure that your heels are directly below the knees, with a bend of preferably exactly 90 degrees, no more, no less. Take your right foot on top of your left thigh, keeping the foot flexed so that the right ankle makes a nice solid connection with your left femur bone.

Inhale sit up straighter and on your exhale begin to lean forward to stretch your right hip, glutes and low back. Fold forward as much as you are able to. With the inhale you can release slightly and then re-enter into that deep hip opener with each exhale. Breath deeply here and stay for at least 15-30 seconds. Repeat on the other side with the left foot flexed on top of the right femur, again making sure that the right foot is on the floor with the heel directly below the knee. Breath and listen to what your body needs.

Finally, with both feet firmly planted on the ground and with a 90 degree bend in each knee, inhale the arms up to the sky. Then as you exhale, turn from the belly to the right.  Place your left hand on the outside of your right thigh and your right hand on the arm or the back of the chair. Allow your shoulders and head to follow as you twist right. Remember to sit up straighter and back off a bit with each inhale and then twist a bit deeper as you exhale. Repeat this twist to the left and be sure to hold these poses as long as feels good for you.

Listen to your body and move through anything else that feels tight or needs energizing.

Thank you for reading and I hope you find these few stretches helpful!
